Question [SOLVED] Mail store - shrink after deletes?

    Hi all,

In exchange, the only way to shrink the size of the mail store was to do an offline defrag. Even if you deleted half the emails your server contained - it would be the same size until you did the offline defrag. The database never shrank...

How does this work in Zimbra? If I have 10g of emails on my server, and delete half of them - does the total size go down? Or do I have to run some kind of utility?

The reason I am asking is that backups are taking longer, and wondering if older emails were deleted/removed - if the size of the backups would go down.

Thanks for any and all help on this,

    Rob

Zimbra doesn't store its mail in a big honking database. It stores it as separate files in /opt/zimbra/store - when you delete an email, (from the trash) the file is deleted.

Nope. Note that Zimbra uses hard-linked message files when a message is received by many users, so deleting a message from one mailbox will decrease its inode count by 1 but will not delete the single copy from disk unless that was the last copy of the message.
