    Default [SOLVED] Tomcat Not Starting

Tomcat isnt starting up after a server reboot. Previously this happened and I was able to resolve it through this thread:

    http://www.zimbra.com/forums/install...t-startup.html

Now, its not working. Even though I shut down zmperditionctl, I still have problems.

    Catalina out only references
zimbra Invalid initial heap size: -Xms8972m

I do have enough ram, and have modified the tomcat heap size, additionally.

All logs have been posted to:
    http://www.ewebzone.net/123 for your analysis

    ---

Previously after the zmperditionctl stop command, all I had to do was start tomcat and everything would work fine. Thats not working here. Neither pop3/imap nor the web interface are working. I'd at least like to get one or the other working.

Thank you for your kind assistance.

Could you post the command you ran because I see:
Could not create the Java virtual machine.
    Invalid initial heap size: -Xms8972m
The specified size exceeds the maximum representable size.

BTW your 2nd two links work, but the first returns:
Forbidden You don't have permission to access /123/ on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
catalina.out & mailbox.log are the biggies for tomcat

    Logfile list: /docs/ne/latest/administration_guide/9_Monitoring.12.1.html#1075561

Alternatively, you can attach a zip of the logs to the forum post if you'd like - click manage attachments. That is if you want to make your zimbra.log smaller than 500MB & grab just the most recent out of that etc - It'll be a while before I can finish downloading it, hope you don't have a monthly bandwidth limit on that...

    Hello,

    Ultimately this was resolved by:

    zmlocalconfig -e tomcat_java_heap_memory_percent=5

I've never had this problem before, nor changed the heap size... but I guess it needed reduced.

Perdition, the proxy, keeps trying to start automatically. How can I disable it at startup once and for all?

    Thanks

Didn't you say that you had changed it?

Is it possible you just modified 3 months back and it didn't apply? -I do see your prior thread (with almost the exact same title)
Do you happen to know what it was set to before? it did say it exceeded the max

While your at it, could you add your version info (zmcontrol -v) to your forum profile?
Just wondering as this was solved back in march:
See: Bug 5851 - RAM much greater than 4GB causes problems - fix memory percent allocation for 32bit machines with more then 2Gb of memory
& Bug 14081 - Tomcat & MySQL memory percentage allocation problem
With the growth of [32bit] servers with large installed memory (8Gb in this case) the percentage allocation should be checked by the installer to not over-allocate memory percentages otherwise the tomcat refuses to start because the Java heap space is greater than 2Gb. Obviously setting the percentages after install with a more reasonable setting such as: zmlocalconfig -e tomcat_java_heap_memory_percent="50" zmlocalconfig -e mysql_memory_percent="20"
Default is like 30 percent to MySql and 40 percent to Java/Tomcat.
but 30% of 8Gb is 2.4 Gb and 40% of 8Gb is 3.2Gb. In a 32 bit system, one process can only have, at most, 2Gb of memory, because of addressing it with 32 bits.

Are you on a Single mailbox install? (you shouldn't use perdition anyways then)
zmprov -l modifyServer server.domain.com -zimbraServiceEnabled imapproxy
then you will need to zmcontrol stop/start
(there's also -zimbraServiceInstalled but you shouldn't need to mess with that right now)

    OR
    su - zimbra
    zmperditionctl stop
    tomcat start
Then login and uncheck IMAP/POP3 Proxy

Are you all ok now? I don't like leaving threads with 'urgent' in the title - and would prefer to mark as [solved] if it's been taken care of.

Yes, I agree... I would like this thread to be marked resolved. The problem was with the heap size. I did modify it previously, but apparently I didn't modify it low enough. To resolve the problem I set it to 5 percent.

The concurrent problem was with Perdition. I turned off this service and was able to restart tomcat successfully.

    Thank you, as always.

no sweat- thanks for marking it as [solved] yourself (jholder removed the 'urgent' a bit earlier because we figured you got past most of your trouble)

-I would slowly bring that heap size back up and test as I go
