Default Messages to hotmail being deferred

    Hello all!

Have had Zimbra in production for almost a week and a half now, and the users are loving it! Have had a few DNS issues to sort out, but all are fixed now except this one problem, which is troubling me.

Any mail addressed to a user at hotmail.com or msn.com gets deferred. The error is:

host or domain name not found. name service error for name=hotmail.com type=mx: host not found, try again.

a 'dig mx hotmail.com' or 'dig mx msn.com' run on the Zimbra server result in a timeout, even though I know my servers are looking everything else up ok.

I know this may have something to do with reverse lookups, can anyone assist me?

    Thanks.

So what nameserver is the zimbra box looking off of? I have ns1-4 at your domain (assuming your at big---------tems) though 207.xxx.xxx.4 has no reply (That is, if you are even using those external ones.)
    Check your /etc/resolv.conf

Can you setup a workstation/server to go off of OpenDNS.com and see if you can resolve it.

Because right now I'm showing mx1-4.hotmail.com all with priorities of 5 & each with 3 IP's in the responses just fine - same goes for msn.com obviously.
    all of of ns1-5.msft.net.

I have a split DNS system set up, our system looks like this...

Internet ====== External Qmail MTA/DNS Server ====== Zimbra

The External MTA has a split DNS set up with an internal and external view. Zimbra is on a 10.1.1.x network and the DNS has a view set up for that. The view has hints set up and so far it's just hotmail.com, msn.com and a couple others that won't resolve.

the external IPs you refer to are the actual external IPs of our DNS server, I'm not sure why they didn't respond to an nslookup, I can get them to work from an external lookup page.

    Thanks for your assistance!

but a dig mx hotmail.com results in:

    dig mx hotmail.com

    ; <<>> DiG 9.3.3rc2 <<>> mx hotmail.com
    ;; global options: printcmd
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

I just can't see why a lookup of yahoo would work just fine but not one of hotmail?
