Default Zimbra 5.0 FOSS eating memory.

    Hi,

I have Zimbra 5.0 installed on an Ubuntu 6.06LTS. It is a virtual machine through VMWare. The machine was allocated 3GB of memory and for some reason Zimbra eats up 95% of it. Is this normal? Here is the memory output:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
    26853 zimbra 16 0 1787m 563m 12m S 0.0 18.5 3:37.36 java

Why is amavisd running so many instances? Is this normal?

    Thanks,
    Miklos

Do you have a lot of mail coming in? My guess would be that it's spawning those procs as a result of multiple scans. It should clean them up.

    What does free -m show?

There aren't that many emails coming in. Since this is a new server which is not put into production yet. There are 4 users with maximum 3 emails/user/day currently. The alarming part is how much memory will it require when it goes live? Maybe an incorrect setting?

    Default could be tomcat

Tomcat can be a hog. IIRC the default settings for it with Zimbra will pretty much cause it to consume whatever you have. If you run 'ps aux | grep tomcat' and look at the -Xms and -Xmx values, you'll see how much stack/heap memory it is allocating. There is information here Performance Tuning Guidelines for Large Deployments - Zimbra :: Wiki
on how to adjust tomcat. There is also information there on tuning other parts of Zimbra like amavisd.

Apologies if this post is a dupe, but I'm not seeing the reply I posted.
