Default Mem. usage openldap in 5.0.2 GA

    Hi,

I've just done an installation of 5.0.2 GA and it looks like the memory usage of slapd as increased a lot. In 5.0.1 is was around 24M, which is normal but in 5.0.2 it is 365M. This is for a fresh install without any accounts created. Is this normal ?

    Best regards,

    Default Second That

I just upgraded from 4.5.9 to 5.0.2 and my memory usage almost doubled. All of the extra is slapd, it is now using 350MB-400MB.

This is a very small install (1 domain, 3 users) and I used to use around 500MB of RAM, now I use close to 1GB. The entire system is processing less than 40 emails a day.

My openldap-data directory only has 9MB in it, I don't see how 9MB of data in the database can turn into 350MB of data in RAM, well, I'm sure its possible (XML does that in inefficient parsers), but I know slapd didn't used to use this much RAM.

    Default

Mine is running around 368000kB so I'd say yes.

    Best regards,
I tracked this down to the increase in file descriptors between 5.0.1 and 5.0.2. If you need slapd smaller, and can run with fewer file descriptors, edit /etc/security/limits.conf appropriately for the zimbra user to something smaller.

I've also raised the issue with the other OpenLDAP developers, so we can look at a long term fix.

    Default update...

Sorry for the long delay in getting back here. What might be considered a safe level? I reduced it to 256k, and it seems fine, but I'd like to try 128k... what are these "file descriptors" used for? Why does zimbra need 500,000 of them?
