Question [SOLVED] Backup - RSYNC - some files vanished....

    Hi all,

I did a backup last night and got a weird message I have never seen before - rsync warning: some files vanished before they could be transfered (code 24) at main.

I rebooted the server and everything is working.

Any idea what this could mean? Is this backup any good?

    Thanks,
    Rob

Rsync builds a file list when it starts. This message is telling you that from the time the rsync command built its list to the time when it was copying the actual file the file was no longer on the system. If you had Zimbra running at the time you were executing the rsync command then my guess is that it could be the temporary files that amavisd uses or something like that. If you didn't have Zimbra running at the time of the backup then maybe a cron job kicked in.

    thanks for the reply.

I did a zmcontrol stop before the backup, so I am assuming everything is shut down.

I don't think it is a cron job either, unless zimbra sets its own (I did not manually create one).

If it happens again - should I just try another backup/rsyn?

    Thanks,
    Rob

Zimbra does setup some cron jobs when you install it, and some of them are "cleanup" jobs, where they would be getting rid of files. If you can narrow down what files rsync is complaining about that might help, but most likely it is nothing to worry about. (At least that's my opinion.)

rsync should tell you which files vanished, though you may need to turn the output verbosity up from the default (add --verbose to the command line).

If you know which files vanish between the initial listing and trying to transfer, you'll know whether to worry or not!

Plus the logger service does not always stop right away, so if the rsync started right after the stop command, it may have picked up some stuff that would soon change.

thanks for the help. I think the logger issue was that I started the rsync really fast and the logger wasn't done doing whatever it was doing. I did another backup immediately afterwards and it came up clean.

    Thanks,
    Rob
