Yeah I know Reason for saying though was that they may have helped with some *really* big installs, and potentially have some additional tuning tips

I have one server, a dual dual-core Xeon 3.0Ghz Dell PowerEdge 1950 w/4GB of RAM running 32-bit Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and Zimbra 5.0.4 NE with over 4400 users on it. It only has mirrored 300GB SAS drives due to only having two drive bays.

Performance appears to be pretty good, but backups take a while!

thanks Schlingblade , that a good comparison to what I'm thinking about doing. Are all your users using the AJAX web client ?

Are you using the built in NE backup ? if so do you use full & incremental backups. I'd be interested how long they do take to run and how much data your backing up.

Most users use the web interface, but we do have a lot of POP and IMAP users as well.

We are using the builtin backup services. I have /opt/zimbra/backup as a symlink to a mounted filesystem on a NAS. Backups are fairly large, usually close to the amount of data in the mailbox store. I currently have about 98GB of email, so a full backup is pretty large (I don't have exact sizes).

I run one full backup a week, and two incrementals spaced out. I have two Zimbra servers for different purposes (second one is on the same hardware, but only 200 users), and I space out the backups so both servers aren't trying to archive at the same time on the same days.

OK, backup times using the NE backup utility for 4466 users (98GB mail total) appear to hover between 4 and 4.5 hours for a full backup over NFS (symlink for /opt/zimbra/backup).

    The incremental took 15 minutes.
