Having it work both ways would be nice, but the alias actually belongs to the account and the account would seem to be more fixed than an alias
I can't see a reason where I would need to use the alias instead of the actual account, but then again, I try to learn something new everyday
In most use cases adding the root account of an alias is a better way of going about this but I can see the point of allowing adding of an alias (transferal of alias to a different user later among other things).
You can try searching bugzilla at bugzilla.zimbra.com
OK, how about this scenario:
I have a sales position (rep.100) that is a member of many distribution lists. In order to simplify admin, I created an alias called rep.100. I put that alias in all of the relevant distribution lists. I then map that sales position alias (rep100) to the sales rep's name(joe.smith).
When there is a new sales rep (john.adams), I just move the alias (rep.100) to the new account.
Unfortunately, the result is that the alias is then removed from all of the groups .
I could swear that this was working the way I expected at one point...
Any suggestions for a workaround?
Or is this something I should submit a bug report about?
lego21 & dwill are referring to "display the alias in dist list instead of account name" > Which we seem to do now when I test on 5.0.10
Yours is actually because you're deleting the alias when it's attached to joe.smith (won't let you move it to john.adams till it's removed from joe.smith) and as the alias is no longer valid it's also removed from the distribution lists.
So you & ArcaneMagus want RFE's for either:
A) Aliases to not be removed from dist lists automatically.
B) The aliases to be 'unlinked' and allow multiple people to use the same alias...
C) Method to transfer aliases (ie an override button next to 'this alias is already in use' that would create an ldap attrib for zimbraMailAlias on the 2nd account, then delete the alias from the 1st account without dist list cleanup)

A) would fit what I am trying to do, I believe.
We are not necessarily removing accounts, just playing musical chairs - Our reps are fairly mobile between divisions (and those division's distribution lists). A common scenario is two reps exchanging territories.
I can see, though how (especially in the NE) Zimbra wouldn't want any dangling aliases...
Thanks for the quick response!
