Zimbra installs ClamAV, a popular anti-virus software. It's about as reliable as any other anti-virus software.

We update the virus definitions automatically, the software is updated at each new release of Zimbra if necessary. You can update the software yourself, there's an article in the forums (or the wik) but it's not really necessary to update the software manually.

Personally I do feel that the ability to introduce a second, commercial, AV scanner would be of benefit to the product. Though even if this was to happen it does not negate the fact of having a different one installed on your local workstations.

Why do you want to change it? Are you experiencing any problems with getting virus emails?

If you want to update ClamAV to the latest version then have a read of Updating CLAMAV - Zimbra :: Wiki. Also, to extend the functionality for Spam signatures you can add these SaneSecurity definitions.

Mind you, I should point out that the current version of Zimbra has clam-av 0.93 which is the most recent stable release (for a few more days). You should also be aware that any update to clam-av will be overwritten during any Zimbra upgrade.
