Many of our customers are using Outlook. Some of them have absolutely huge accounts. Because Outlook gets unstable and slow once the .pst approaches its ~2GB "limit," using Outlook with very large accounts doesn't work that well. Further, many of our customers use multiple computers and would like to have the same data on their desktop at work and on their laptop.
Having people use the Zimbra web client, Zimbra Desktop, Thunderbird, or other client, would solve the problem. Unfortunately, a lot of people just don't want to let go of their Outlook.
So, what we need is some way of archiving data on the server level and not let Outlook download/sync the archived data.
One idea would be to simply have a second account of some sort, like firstname.lastname@example.org, which they could still access through the Zimbra web client and search for old emails, appointments, and contacts. Customers we've talked to are open to paying for a second account or the extra storage as long as they can have it all server side, with all the benefits of centralized storage, backups, etc., as opposed to doing AutoArchiving to local .psts in Outlook. However, there would need to be some type of automatic archiving feature so that they don't have to manually move old emails from one account to the "archive" account.
We've looked into the Zimbra Archiving & Discovery module, but as far as we can tell, it doesn't quite fulfill the need as outlined above.
I'm not a developer by any means, but this type of feature doesn't seem like it would be tremendously hard to implement ... although, I might be wrong.
Does anyone have ideas of how something like this could be achieved? If someone has ideas for it, or just a bit of a "hack" and some script that could perform a move of emails and appointments older than some date, or when the mailbox reaches a certain storage amount, I'm listening.
