Default Display Name When Using Zimbra LDAP Address Book

I saw this mentioned in a post back in November. However, I didn't see a solution and it sitll seems to be an issue. I also searched the Bug List, but didn't see anything outstanding for this problem.

When using the Zimbra GAL as an LDAP address book with external email clients the Name field shows up as the user's email address minus the "@domain.tld" part, instead of the Display Name field. This happens no matter whether the Display Name is set to "auto", or if it is manually filled in. I've tested this with both Thunderbird and Outlook 2000 so far.

Just wondering if this is a known issue that is on the "to do" list to fix.

I think this is a limitation of the LDAP address book support in the clients. Have you configured another LDAP directory that shows the display name? If so what filter did you configure?

Yes, I have used another OpenLDAP directory as an address book with both clients and the Display Name shows correctly. With both Thunderbird and Outlook 2000 I did not have to configure a filter. Under Thunderbird you can specify a filter, which by default is (objectclass=*). With Outlook 2000 I don't see any place to change this. The only thing I can find is a check box for "Use simple search filter".

What was the schema like? Can you dump an example user?

The OpenLDAP directory that we have setup is a pretty basic one. We are using objectClasses organizationalPerson and inetOrgPerson. Here is a sample of an export to LDIF from the application GQ:

    dn: cn=John Doe,dc=brosco,dc=com
    objectClass: top
    objectClass: organizationalPerson
    objectClass: inetOrgPerson
    cn: John Doe
    sn: Doe
    givenName: John
    uid: jad
    telephoneNumber: 1111
    mail: jdoe@brosco.com

I'm had this issue with Thunderbird also.
I also use Thunderbird to look up addresses in Exchange 5.5 which displays the 'Name' Value correctly in the default Thunderbird setup. I think whats happening is that Thunderbird is mapping the the 'Name' field to 'cn' in ldap.

You can change the value Thunderbird maps to Name using the about:config tool. Just search for the following key :

    ldap_2.servers.default.attrmap.DisplayName

and change the value to displayName for Zimbra
