Well, I too am having this same problem. I wish I had some info.

Would be really nice if someone had some insight on this.

Does zimbra treat external imap accounts as a regular imap client, and behave accordingly?
I.E. Does it fetch the headers, then grab the body of the email when requested? Or does
it attempt to grab the entire user mailstore and index and sort it?

It acts as if there is some hard limit getting hit.

There is an open bug on this, but no action. It's a few months old
as well. No traffic, no action.

Bug 31202 – Larger Mailbox size causes problem to sync mails from External IMAP account

Further, it's kinda obvious that Zimbra does not behave as an imap client. it does in fact pull in all the mail, and index and sort it.
A regular imap client would be a great deal more useful in cases like these, where folks have old mail archives going back
for many years, and are many gigs in size.

Just tried it with an account that has 72K mails totaling 501M.
Still fails and bails with a Fetch FAILED error.

    Does this even work?
I have to assume that it does. However, with external IMAP folder of any
    real size, it fails.
