Then you need to find out why dnsmasq didn't start and you need to fix it, I can't tell you as there's no information. From the information you've provided there is, obviously, no A or MX record and you've not given any information about your hosts file.
    Regards

How would I know, you've provided no information that there's any problem - merely saying 'it doesn't work' does not tell us anything.

You really do need to do some research on these forums and the wiki (and also read the documentation), all your questions have been asked and answered before. Look in the log files and search the forums for the error messages you find.
    Regards

I know you have already fixed the issue but I wanted to reply and share how I fixed this issue on Ubuntu 10 on Amazon EC2.

    1) I opened /etc/hostname
    2) Put in the host name before the two amazon provided hostnames
    3) Commented out the amazon hostnames by prefixing them with at #
    4) restarted the server

Now able to install without this error.

For what is is worth I had set the hostname under /etc/hostnames to server.com well this was a mistake becuase it shouldn't be a FQDN hostname.
For my Windows brothers and sisters out there this should be a netbios name like server not FQDN like server.com.

Anyways hopefully this will help someone out there.

to 3.1.4. So this is a box that has been working (ok, except for the purge thing.. which led me to the upgrade).

Now the box says the /etc/hosts is broken. When I `hostname`, I get mail.xxxxxx.com. When I ping it, dig it from another server... Everything is fine with dns, from other servers. On the box itself I have no problem.

    The exact error is:
    HTML Code:
ERROR: Installation can not proceeed. Please fix your /etc/hosts file
            to contain:

            <ip> <FQHN> <HN>

Where <IP> is the ip address of the host,
<FQHN> is the FULLY QUALIFIED host name, and
<HN> is the (optional) hostname-only portion
Any help? my /etc/hosts looks just like that?
    HTML Code:
    # IP-Address Full-Qualified-Hostname Short-Hostname
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    xx.xx.xx.xx mail.xxxxxxxxxxx.com mail
    Thanks!
