Currently for our backups I'm looping through the domains, putting them into maintenance mode, dumping LDAP and MySQL, rsyncing those dumps and the index and store directories to our backup server, then taking the domains out of maintenance mode. The problem that's arising is the user's are complaining about the downtime of the system.
I was curious what the side effects of taking the server out of maintenance mode after the LDAP/MySQL dumps would be. Obviously you'd run the risk of having files in index or store become inconsistent, but (in my head) that would only potentially apply to new emails (which wouldn't be consistent with the state at the dump anyway).
Am I mistaken? Could something catastrophic occur because of this approach? What are the general implications?
