What version of Zimbra are you running? 64 bit?

I run almost the same setup on a dual quad core xeon with 6 gigs of ram. It never slows down. From your loads, I'm guessing the system is fine for what you are using it for.

It sounds like your backup system is causing the problems. Do you stop Zimbra when you are backing up the files? If you are not, you are not getting a proper backup because files are in use.

I backup this way (not an exact script):

    1. rsync -avr /opt/zimbra /backup/current
    2. stop zimbra
    3. rsync -avr --delete /opt/zimbra /backup/current
    4. start zimbra
    5. compress /backup/current to file and transfer offsite.

By copying most of the files while Zimbra is running, you minimize downtime. You sync the rest of the files while it is down which makes it very quick.

I'd be curious to see if it solves your problem if you change your backup system and update to the latest version of Zimbra (if you aren't there already).

You can disable the antivirus and antispam through zimbra's admin console:
    https://yourdomain.com:7071
But with your output of top command, I didn't see anything strange. Waiting until you disable the antivirus and antispam service.
P/s: after disable antivirus and antispam services, please restart zimbra's service.

bevore he shuodl disable it he should say what exactly is slow.
    i have a guess.
i guess only apache2 is bloody slow not zimbra itself - that case i could bet for an dns problem or php.n but we really need more info on that or he need a consultant because it looks like his problems going far beyond this issue :-)

i really think it`s the problem of the backup script.
I will have a look at all what you mentioned tomorrow, guess the serer will then be slow again.

    Hi,

okay, just in case i didnīt really mention. Everything is slow. Zimbra Webmail is slow, Apache2 (Forum / Website) is slow and even typing within putty (ssh) is slow. So the whole server slows down for some reason.

The server is now slow again, restarting Apache2 doesn`t speed up the website or the forum. Same speed as without restarting.
Restarting Zimbra does absolutely speed up nothing. Not even the Zimbra-Webmail.

I attached 2 scrreenshots of htop, one showing the memory-load and one the cpu-load. As you can see, zimbra java takes a huge space of memory for some reason. Is this maybe the reason why the server slows down that much.
In addition i had a look at htop about 5 minutes. Almost every minute, the cpu-load goes up to 100% for about 10 seconds and than goes down again to ~2 %.

I now figured out that not only all the webstuff slows down, even the FTP-Server slows down to 30 kb/s up-stream. (My connection should be able of much more and it is, when the server is fast again.)

By the way, i found a process called console-kit-daemon wich was started about 60 times. Killed now alll those processes since I read that this might be an Ubuntu-Error.

So actually I don`t know still what to do except restarting the server every time it slows down that much.

    [edit]:
I just saw that the forum resizes the screenshots so you can`t see anything.
I uploaded them additionally at imagesack:

    cpuload: Imageshack - cpuload.png

    Hello again

First image is fine is possible to read at least on my my 2 24inchis *g*

So first. Its ok of HTOp images, but for the forum ps ax is ok. i mentioned htop so you can easier monitor your server special when it have hard times.

in normal times a regular whatchdog server is fine enough but figuring out some issues is good to have htop as small window in the corner all day :-)

Yes the spike are normal. after we solved that issue i give you the forum thread where you get the solution for that. But for now lets stick to basic install and setup as close as we can.

You memory consumtion is fine. youve only 11megs in swap which means nothing this isnt the slow down part.
linux uses as much as it can for buffering and diskcache. so your memory is never emtpy.

as you can see grennbars means processes, blue and brow are buffer and diskcache. you use only 50% for processes which is quit comfortable so dont worry about that.

no even in highest load situations you should be able to type something in the console.
so i bet youre using an ssh console over the net ?

    so important:
What happen if you restart apache ? better? no then :
Restart zimbra . better? no then: restart DNS server if any installed here.
DO thi sprocedure with every running service on your machine until speed is back again and post her which service it was.

it make no real difference if you restart single services or the hole server

what about dns does it resolve other names propper and fast ?
what happen if you stop your proftpd ?

another way to check things like network connect:

install mtr to check if you get some serios packetloss for some reason (dont htink so but its not so bad havin mtr installed :-)
    aptitude install mtr

mtr -s 1024 Home Sweet Home and let it run for at least 20 min
if you get no paketloss its fine

PS: why youre retrieving a book about building machines on the server ? :-) screens are fine lol
