Is this right?
When looking for a particular contact or item I do a search using "All Item Types" and the results only show items from the user's account, no the GAL. I repeated the search with the exact same parameter but selecting the GAL as the source and it works as expected.
A look at mailbox.log shows that no GAL search is being done for "All item types"

I'm not sure if this is the expected behavior, haven't found any bug related to it.
