I'm having the same issue from a new Droid Bionic.

Using Release 6.0.6_GA_2324.RHEL5_20100406144520 RHEL5 FOSS edition.

OK, so this is a known issue with the Droid phones...

Apparently somewhere after the first Droids, Motorola switched their email to something called "Motorola Android Mail 1.0" and in their brilliant implementation, they completely broke support for SMTP Authentication.

Verizon admits this, Motorola admits this, and the Droid users have made both companies aware -- unfortunately, the issue has been known for well over a year and Motorola has no plans to fix it.

The solution for the newer Droid phones is to use an app called K-9 Mail. It has a much more standard email implementation and is integrated very nicely with the Android OS notification system. You can download it in the Android Market.
