    Default What Outlook functionality would be missing with Open Source Edition?

    Vs. Microsoft Exchange, what functionality would be missing from for MS Outlook users?

    A typical user makes use of email, global address book, and calendaring/scheduling. Does this all work well with the community edition of Zimbra? What may a typical user notice as missing functionality?

    Background : I am looking to setup email/colab/groupware solution at low cost for a group of schools, and the Network Edition, while feature complete, is complete unaffordable.

    Hi

    With open source edition there is no calendar and contact support for Outlook available.

    For this features you need the "Zimbra Outlook Connector (ZCO)" only available with the Network Edition of Zimbra.

    If you can change the mail client (I know that this is impossible ;D) to Thunderbird calender and contacts will work fine.
    calendar -> Lightning
    contacts -> Zindus

    No.
    Zimbra Desktop is an full E-Mail Client.

    If you would sync calendar and contacts between Zimbra and Outlook you need the Zimbra Outlook Connector.
    Or is this wrong and there is a other way?

    What do you think Outlook is? It's a full email client.

    If you wish to synchronise calendar, contacts, tasks and email you get all of that with Zimbra Desktop - with the OSS version of Zimbra.

    Excuse my current ignorance with the Zimbra product line, but is the Zimbra Desktop system available freely (as part of the Community Edition)? I thought it was part of the Network Edition package.

    No, it's not part of the Community Edition. It's a separate product and it is open source, freely available and can connect to multiple mail servers - see the link I gave in post #3 or the main Zimbra Website for product details.

    ZCS Open Source Edition is full functional itself when used with webmail (at end user end), only functionality missing is mobility, however, users can sync their mails with IMAP on mobile device. As Bill said, you should check Zimbra Desktop too. ZD is full functional offline client for ZCS with no missing functionality. Its operations are very similar to outlook, so users would not resist and shall be familiar with ZD in just few days of operation.

    As administrator, missing functionality is 'backup' (hot backup), however, there are so many solutions available on zimbra wiki to get the rid of backups. You may check and try what suits you best.

    With limited budget, in my opinion ZCS FOSS with ZD is the perfect setup.
