Default How to change default email address to alias when doing lookup

    Hello,

I have set up ZCS 7.1.3 for a medium sized user base, and everyone is happy, however, after taking everyone away from msexchange, one issue seems to bug the users a lot.

In my setup, every user (John Smith for example) has the username of jsmith@domain.com (to ease logins among other things like company policy) and an email alias of john.smith@domain.com

My problem is, that when they look each other up in GAL, the email address returned by the lookup is always the short one, and I didn't find a way to replace it with the alias. The company policy is that logins are done with the short username, but the default email address is the long one.

Any way to configure the lookups o they adhere to our policy?

For the account in question, tick "Hide in GAL" for the account. I think this should accomplish what you want?

tried it - this hides the user with the aliases in the GAL lookups. I only need to hide the primary email address

This is what I'm using it for:
    login: user1@domain1 (hide in GAL)
    alias: user.name.long@domain1

when I do a GAL search, I only find the alias, not the login email. Isn't this what you are trying to accomplish? Perhaps I misunderstand.

yes, this is exactly what I want to happen, but if I hide the user in GAL, I can't look him up at all, alias or not alias.

Are you sure your lookups come from the GAL and not from the local search history?

Yes, pretty sure its from the GAL, since I specifically choose GAL in the zimbra web client to do the search, when in the addressbook.

Just in case, I created a new user, and tested again - if I hide the user in GAL, his name cannot be found in the GAL.

Can you elaborate on how you set this up? Maybe some additional options are required?

I wonder why none of the Zimbra associates pitched in so far, they are usually very quick on the uptake. If what I'm trying to do is impossible, that's also a viable answer IMO

Ah, since i have multiple domains, I also do this:
    zmprov mcf zimbraGalInternalSearchBase ROOT
    zmprov md <domain> zimbraGalLdapSearchBase ROOT

Not sure if this affects the alias lookups, though!

Yeah, I have ~10 domains managed on this server as well, and I have the same settings set up
