    Default Zimbra OpenSource Edition Troubleshoot

Have restored Zimbra OSE after a dead disk.
    All services start.
    zmdbintegrityreport comes up clean.
    zmfixperms has been run.

ZWC comes up, login accepted, but things never progress past the theme splash screen.
Zimbra Admin console never comes up to login prompt.
No IMAP/POP sessions can pull data.

zmmailbox command can attach/query accounts just fine.

Let me try to ensure all relevant details are included:

    ZCS OSE 7.1.4 - RHEL5 x64 build
    CentOS 5.8 x64
Run as a VM (2 vCPU, 2GB RAM)
    - this is for a 2-user system.
    - running under this configuration for ~4 years without perf issues.

Cold backups via Bacula of /opt/zimbra

hypervisor disks dead, so too all VMs sitting on it.

    Fix Process
    • Fresh install of hypervisor w/ new disks.
      Fresh OS install, patch.
Fresh ZCS 7.1.4 Open Source Edition install - RHEL5 x64 build.
Login to the fresh instance admin console fine.
      Stop fresh instance.
mv fresh instance from /opt/zimbra to /opt/zimbra.default
Restore from successful FULL backup to /opt/zimbra.
zmfixperms -v run - all reports OK.
zmdbintegrityreport -r -v run - all reports OK.
      - actually manually ran the full CLI for the mysqlcheck with the -m and -e options just for giggles
      - all report OK.
Can run the zmmailbox command and attach to various accounts.
      - all accounts appear OK.

      /var/log/zimbra.log empty.
      /opt/zimbra/log/mailbox.log showing normal entries.

I'm at a loss to understand where to go to understand the behaviour.

    Did you run 'zmfixperms -extended'?

I seem to remember that was necessary when I replicated a ZCS server from a backup.

I did indeed. I have ultimately "solved" the issue in a very strange way.

The original VM was running under XenServer (6.0.2). When rebuilding I moved to ESXi 5.

The ESXi 5 VM was fine - installed/patched/running, etc., etc.

Zimbra just wouldn't "behave" when restoring it there.

I therefore build another CentOS 5.8 x64 VM on the rebuilt XenServer host, restored the data as described above, and BOOM! Everything works perfectly.

I'm at a loss to understand what about the two different VMs made the difference. Same VM config, same networking, same, same, same.

A question perhaps for another forum is:

Would the fact that the original VM was running an x64 OS under an AMD proc, while the rebuilt VM was running the *same* x64 OS built on a Xeon proc make any difference?.

This wasn't a *restored* VM. It was a cleanly built VM, and nothing but a data restore to a filesystem.

Anyway. Curious. Thanks for the suggestion.

    1) make sure the zimbra UID is same on new server
    find /opt/zimbra | xargs grep 'zimbra_uid'
    edit /opt/zimbra/conf/loacalconfig.xml
change zimbra_uid to the correct uid

    2) run as root user
    /opt/zimbra/libexec/zmfixperms --verbose --extended
above will fix more permissions specially on the /opt/zimbra/store folder

Thanks for the tip. I would hope that as all data was restored to /opt/zimbra that the UID itself would have been maintained, but I'll keep that one in mind.

I did indeed run the zmfixperms -verbose -extended (with only a single dash...) multiple times, with much lovely confirmation that perms had been reset cleanly.

Good to know I was at least following the right steps. Thanks for the reply.
