Default Divert mail to secondary mx during zimbra maintenance

I understand that if the primary mx is down mail is diverted to the secondary mx. However, if the primary mx is up and I still want to divert incoming email what do you do?

I've tried the various domain status settings, e.g. maintenance and closed, but with maintenance mail is queued on the zimbra mta and with closed email is bounced to the sender, which is not ideal.

    Thanks

What we ultimately want is secondary.mailserver.com to accept, store ( and forward ) mail for primary.mailserver.com when it goes down.

On secondary.mailserver.com from within the administration console add the domain in question you are configuring. From console on secondary.mailserver.com run the following commands as user zimbra

    zmprov md domain.com zimbraMailCatchAllAddress @domain.com
    zmprov md domain.com zimbraMailCatchAllForwardingAddress @domain.com
    zmprov md domain.com zimbraMailTransport smtprimary.mailserver.com

In DNS your primary mail server should have a lower weighting ( 1 in this example ) then your secondary (10) and should look something like this.

    [root@mailhost ~]# dig mx mailserver.com

    ; <<>> DiG 9.7.3-P3-RedHat-9.7.3-8.P3.el6_2.1 <<>> mx mailserver.com

Thanks, but I should've probably stated that the secondary email server is actually a hosted service, e.g. Dyn Backup MX. Therefore, I can't make the changes you suggested.

I can easily block port 25 in the firewall where the primary email server is located and mail will divert to secondary.

I was just curious what Zimbra admins do in the situation I outlined in my first post

    Personally I don't use a secondary mx.

All modern mail servers keep rejected mail in a queue and periodically attempt to redeliver before bouncing.

As long as your Zimbra isn't offline for more than a few hours any mail sent to you should arrive after you put it online again.
