You mentioned Putty so I presume you are on a Windows machine. If so, open up a command prompt and type "telnet <IP of Zimbra Server> 7071" and if you get a response then the Admin console should work from IE/Firefox on your Windows machine. If not, try changing the port in the telnet command to 25; if you get no response the Zimbra server may not be running correctly, OR, you have a bigger firewall/networking issue.

    Keep us posted!

Is there a config file I can edit for the port/url?

    OK, good.

To take DNS out of the picture, go to https://<ip address of zimbra server>:7071/ to get to the Admin Console.

Note that it must be https, not http!

    Hope that helps,

Bummer. From your putty session where from the root account you did "su - zimbra", please post the output from "zmcontrol status" -- again, run as the zimbra user please.
