Default Backing up Zimbra to a Windows XP machine?

    Hi all,

I came across this instruction Backing up and restoring Zimbra (Open Source Version) - Zimbra :: Wiki
and would like to backup my Zimbra mail server (it's a CentOS machine).

I have WinSCP installed on my Windows XP machine and can get to the mail server remotely. I purchased a 500GB external hard drive and connected it to my Windows machine (drive H). Now my question is can I copy the Zimbra directory to my H drive via Win SCP?

    Thanks in advance

Not a good idea. Symlinks and permissions would be messed up. If you tar'd up the directory and copied to XP, you would be fine.

    Thanks RyecoAaron,

    1) Should I tar the /opt/zimbra directory or other folders as well?

    2) Can I perform this while Zimbra is running or that will affect my users?

    Thanks

No other folders should be needed.

    No you can't.

There are many backup scripts and articles in the forums and wiki, I'd suggest you take a look at those and see what's necessary to create a correct backup that can be restored. When you've created the backup the don't forget to do a test restore (as many times as you need) so you know how to do now rather in an emergency (and also document your procedure for the backup/restore).
    Regards

Thanks Bill, I've been reading up on this for about a week now. Came across this article: Backing up and restoring Zimbra (Open Source Version) - Zimbra :: Wiki

Is it easier to do a simple cp like discussed here: http://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Open_Sou...ckup_Procedure or to follow the script?

I have another box which can see the mail server on the network and was planning to backup the mail server to that box. What I was looking for was a step by step (and easier to understand) guide on how to run those script. Thanks

As far as I know you don't want to touch the files while zimbra is running because of lock files and data corruption. You can tar it when it's offline with no problems.
