Which application? Where is your application located - on Zimbra server or on another server? Is your application on same IP subnet?
Your question is, like coming to the doctor, saying "I am ill. Give me the cure."

Now, try ading your Application server's IP to "MTA Trusted networks", either in "Global Settings", or directly on "Server Settings" --> MTA

But what I recommend is still using at least sending via secure port 587 and use authentication. In PHP it is very easy to implement SMTP authentication and you will bypass many filtering checks on Zimbra server by using authentication.
Zimbra on SGH dedicated hosting farm, Slovenia.
In 2013 we announce new program of low cost SSL server certificates.
