    Default Speeding up Web Client?

    Hi all,

My home Zimbra CE server (only my wife and I use it) runs on a P4 1.6ghz with 2 gig of ram. The web client has always loaded rather slowly even on my internal lan. Are there any known settings that can be changed to speed things up a little?

    Thanks!

    Two solutions:

    1) use a client like Outlook, Thunderbird and connect to your Zimbra through IMAP/SMTP

    2) wait the new Zimbra release with tiny HTML client support.

    Hi Klug,

I was using http but now I am using https. However, it has always been a slow load on the webclient. I have not noticed a difference between http/https and load time.

    Thanks

My guess is that the Java backend is hogging up all your resources on the server. The webserver, sendmail, AJAX interface, etc isnt all that bandwidth intensive (especially if you are on a LAN), but if you are sitting there waiting for the server to run all that java code, you might think that it was running slow.

I think the number one request to Sun when they asked the community for what new 'features' they wanted in the new version of java was "MAKE IT FASTER". Looks like they dropped the ball on that one.

Solution: Get a more powerful server, and throw as much RAM as you can afford at it.

I think that for his needs his server is probably more than adequate.

mrupright, what browser are you using to access the webmail interface? The general consensus is that Firefox works much better (read: faster) that IE.

Also, have a look at top or similar on the server when in use - determine if the speed problem is server-side or client-side.

What version of zimbra are you running?

    Hi ringnebula,

I use IE 6 and 7 and I am running Zimbra version 4.0.5. I will take another look at top. Also I will give firefox a try. I wanted to add (which I should have added to my original post) once the webclient is loaded it works fine. Just the initial load is slow...could I be nitpicking???

    thanks

Could you provide timings? Reboot the client and launch the browser, start the clock from when you launch the zimbra address.

Then reboot the machine and launch outlook, start the clock from clicking it's icon.

Stop the clock, in each instance when the application is fully loaded - I'd be most interested to know the numbers.

In my experience, Outlook is slow to launch, and the situation gets worse with each release, but Zimbra 4.5 on firefox beats the pants of previous versions for both load times and execution, and I promise you that the html client of zimbra will devestate outlook when it comes to "click-to-complete" times.

    Hi Dirk,

I only use the webclient and not outlook. My load times average around 45-60 seconds. I experienced the same times with firefox.

    Thanks for the help

^^ The above statement leads me to believe that his machine (server) may not be up to the task at hand. Either that, or something is drastically wrong with the systems config

Client side, Zimbra is pretty lightweight. All the heavy computational tasks are handled by the server. I would be curious to see load averages, and swap (iostat/top) during that 60 seconds that zimbra is taking to load.
