I use a third party for my dns records. All mail is delivered and sent correctly through the zimbra server including pop3 and smtp. So I wouldn't think there would be a problem with dns records (though I'm not sure).
here is my etc hosts file. And I must say I did have some problems with this during the install. However, this is the current config and everything (except the "view mail" function is working with this.
127.0.0.1 domainname.com localhost.localdomain
127.0.0.1 mail.domanname.com localhost
xxx.xxx.xx.xx(public ip) mail.domainname.com
The /etc/hosts file isn't correct, it should be in this format:with only those two lines it. It's detailed in the Zimbra Quick Start Guide. make that change, reboot the server and see if you still have your problem.Code:127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost xxx.xxx.xx.xx(public ip) mail.domainname.com mail
I wouldn't be too sure about external hosted DNS, go to this page http://www.pingability.com/zoneinfo.jspand or this page http://www.dnsreport.com/ and check for yourself.
when you say "127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost"
do you mean litteraly? or do I have to substitute something with my real domains? it's not clear to me if this is literal?
I'll try and change my hosts file when I get home from work (2hrs) and let you know.
What's your Zimbra hostname?
Do the following:
1. Log in to your server
2. type: su zimbra
3. type: zmhostname
This will give you the zimbra hostname.
so if i change my /etc/hosts file then my server gets messed up and my users can't send email.
when i su to zimbra and do a hostname i get what i would expect:
which is my FQDN.
When you guys do a "view mail" from the admin UI do you get redirected to a /zimbra/auth page??
I presume you did a zmhostname.
When I click the link the url I see is: .... /zimbra/mail (in a new window)
When I change .... /zimbra/mail into .... /zimbra/auth I get a tomcat error.
BTW: you of cause restarted your server after the changes?

yeah, i restarted but then zimbra desn't even start. i fixed the host file and everthing works again except the view mail function. i get that tomcat errror too on the redirection to the /zimbra/auth. this is weird.

here's another clue......
when i go to the "aliases" in the admin UI and then "view mail" it works!
It launches the aliased mailbox......Just need this for the rest of the accounts now.....
