I have Release 8.0.4.GA.5737.UBUNTU12.64 UBUNTU12_64 FOSS edition.

Everything works well. I have a default domain and another virtual domain. Accounts in both domains can send and receive email. However, I am trying to get localhost/root email. Email sent to root simply disappears.

echo "Howdy" | sendmail -v root
echo "Howdy" | sendmail -v root@localhost

My main domain is westcoasteden.com. From the command line, if I send an email to an external account using the same echo command, the mail arrives in my mailbox and is shown as coming from: root <root@mail.westcoasteden.com>. If I reply to this account, I get a bounce back from my Zimbra server (relay access denied). However, if I send an email to root@westcoasteden.com, it arrives in the mailbox@westcoasteden.com (I set up an alias for root@westcoasteden for this account.

I installed mutt and configured mutt for the root account, but this Mailbox (~/Maildir) receives no mail. I can send from Mutt and it arrives as sent from root@mail.westcoasteden.com.

I looked at past messages about this issue and tried a few things, but none seem to work. For example, in my /etc/aliases file, I have a line that says:
root: mailbox@westcoasteden.com

This same line appears in: /opt/zimbra/postfix-2.10.0.2z/conf/aliases.

After I send email to root or root@localhost, I check the queue and the queue is empty. There is also a symbolic link:
/usr/sbin/sendmail symbolically links to /opt/zimbra/postfix/sbin/sendmail.

I see the following in /var/log/zimbra.log after I send an email to root...
