There is no step missing in this scenario because this error is not caused by zimbra requiring permission modification. The cause is by the user being in a working directory zimbra cannot and is not supposed to write to. The fix is simply to be in a directory Zimbra has write permissions to.

Yes, I get that but yes, there was a missing step. Look carefully.

    The person said;

    >these errors, change into a working directory zimbra has write access to (/opt/zimbra) before restarting.
    >To fix the error without reboot.
    >sudo service zimbra stop
    >su zimbra
    >cd ~zimbra
    >zmcontrol start/restart/stop

Then I added the missing step which is to actually run the permissions fix

    >That was actually someone elses log which is posted but that's ok, I get the point and I'll test this next time it happens.
    >By the way, isn't there one step missing?

    >To fix the error without reboot.
    >service zimbra stop
    >/opt/zimbra/libexec/zmfixperms --extended --verbose
    >su zimbra
    >cd ~zimbra
    >zmcontrol start/restart/stop

Unless... you are saying that the permissions problem would never exist IF zimbra were being restarted from the proper directory in which case, that wasn't clear but I believe it is the answer that everyone is looking for when they have this problem.

To properly control your Zimbra Server

    su - zimbra > cd ~zimbra > zmcontrol start/restart/stop

If you are seeing errors similar to the following:
(Cannot run program "/opt/zimbra/bin/zmXXX" (in directory "/root"): error=13, Permission denied) < This is not a zimbra permissions error, it is user error.

    BEGIN FIX:
    su root
    service zimbra stop
    su - zimbra
    zmcontrol start/restart/stop
    END FIX

If admins experience permission errors other than the above, zmfixperms is the tool for correcting them.

added note: su - zimbra (with the hyphen) eliminates the need to cd ~zimbra - Thanks for the info Phoenix
