Default OK, Let me Rephrase the Question...

Is it possible to update external GAL entries from within Zimbra? If so, how is this done?

If not, can someone recommend a ldap client for maintaining the ldap entries more easily than using text files?

    Thanks!

I don't recommend maintaining an LDAP server by hand, but I find the following browser to be very helpful for debugging LDAP issues:

    http://www.jxplorer.org/

If you are using a Windows box (or perhaps an virtual windows box), http://ldapbrowser.com is also quite nice.

Best practices for this sort of thing suggests you want to automate the process of maintaining your directory server. It is pretty easy to do using various scripting languages. I can provide Perl references if that would be helpful to you.

I agree with dnb@, you don't normally maintain LDAP data by hand. There are several free GUI tools for Windows and your choice of unix that work well. You can also use the ldap* command set for a one-off fixes or testing.

There is no way to update external GAL entries within Zimbra. Where I was last used data stored in a database and populated out to LDAP by perl scripts every few minutes.

This is what I was really unclear about. Thanks for clearing it up.

Glad to help. LDAP can be a bear when you first start with it. I'm still learning how you can abuse and break it.
