Default support for Firefox 3 mailto protocol handler?

Firefox 3 provides support for handling mailto: protocol handlers for web based email clients. They include one for Gmail and one for yahoo mail.

    Mechanism looks pretty straight forward.

Does zimbra have a URL we can use to take advantage of this?

Cool new feature...I think I see where this can be handled...

    tools-options-applications-search for the string 'mailto'

Yahoo Mail is in there. I can't figure out how to register my Zimbra servers as a mailto handler and add it to the list. I've looked at the docs, but I'm not sure how to setup the registration.

    Anyone?

    Default Any progress

I'm wondering if anyone has gotten the mailto links to work properly in the Zimbra web client in Firefox 3.

I've set up a test zimbra application using the URL:
    http://zimbraserver/zimbra/?view=compose&to=%s

Unfortunately that results in the To field having mailto:address@server printed in it. Has anyone managed to make this work, or is it something that zimbra is going to have to implement on the server end?

I got it to work doing this:

    1. goto about:config
    2. search for gecko.handlerService.allowRegisterFromDifferentHos t and set to true (you should probably turn this off afterward, it's rather insecure)
    3. type this into the Location bar:
      Code:
      javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","http://mail.example.com/zimbra/?view=compose&to=%s","Zimbra");
    4. the next time you click on a mailto link, you'll get prompted for what mailto handler you'd like to use.

There are a few issues with this - the email address comes through with the entire href value (as in "mailto:user@example.com"), and this doesn't handle subjects or anything complicated in the mailto link. It's still useful, though, if you don't want to use Zimbra Desktop.

Thanks for the tutorial, but I'm having trouble with it.

I put the javascript string in the location bar of a new tab after modifying the gecko entry to True, but nothing happens when I try to go to the location in the location bar.

I've turned off NoScript extention to make sure, but still nothing happens. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Weird, I copied and pasted from what worked for me, but the quotes that show up here in the forum are not regular quotes, so when you paste them back in they don't work. Try replacing them manually, it should work for you. Also, I fixed it in the code block above.
