Got it finally solved, did waht mhehnen describes (took me a while to figure out how) and now it works fine. It worked on my system only after I changed both times (system and user files) the default directory suggested to a directory I specifically set up for it. Still think that adding a "read me first be4 installation in Ubuntu" would help beginners understand what is actually needed and happening. Great programme otherwise though, thanks guys!

Thank you mhehnen, it worked for me, too.
Everything worked fine after I copied the download to an ext4 volume and started everything from there.

I can not decipher the previous post that is the resolution.

I have tried downloading the zimbra desktop directly to my ubuntu 10.10 installation.

    sudo tar zxvf zdesktopfile

    sudo perl install.pl

It installs fine but the icon is blank and has a lock on it. I have tried changing ownership of the icon and the /opt/zimbra folder with no luck, the app will not launch.

If I try to run the user install script without sudo it fails with permission errors.

    Default wiki.ubuntu.com/ZimbraDesktop

For some odd reason, my first two posts are not showing up.
I have also just created a wiki page at:
    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ZimbraDesktop

It has the installation instructions on there.

That's because you're a new forum member and the software, as an anti-spam measure, stops people posting links etc. and puts the post in a moderation queue - you should have seen an error message to that effect when you first posted. I've now removed those posts as they are superfluous as you've posted successfully.

You are on the right track, just need to delete the desktop shortcut and zdesktop folder, and then create it again: Do each of the three lines one at a time:

    cd ~
    sudo rm -rf zdesktop Desktop/zd.desktop
    /opt/zimbra/zdesktop/linux/user-install.pl

    Best Regards,
