    zimbraMailHost was set to curley.quirkservice.com

i changed it to just quirkservice.com ...still the same errors.
then i tried changing it to mail.quirkservice.com ...still the same errors.

ideally, i would like the smtp/imap/pop servers to be "mail.quirkservice.com" instead of just quirkservice.com, but that isn't a big deal.

also, i need to have http://mail.quirkservice.com go to the zimbra login screen. right now only http://mail.quirkservice.com:8080

do i have to set up mail.quirkservice.com:80 in apache to forward to mail.quirkservice.com:8080?

    Default errors

What port is tbird configured to connect to? Can you connect to that port?

WHat account is it logging into? Is the domain correct?

What's in /var/log/zimbra.log around the time of the failure?

I don't think that the apache forwarding will work, but you can try it.

thunderbird connects to the following ports, depending on the configuration:
    imap: 143
    imap with ssl: 993
    smtp: 25

when i telnet localhost:993, it says it can't connect. same for the others.

i am confused to what what should be set to "quirkservice.com" and what should be set to "mail.quirkservice.com" the computers host name is curley.quirkservice.com

the account it is trying to log into is drogers@quirkservice.com

nothing is gettin written to zimbra.log when i try to log it. it is staying the exact same size.

If that's what you're literally typing, your syntax is wrong - telnet takes a space, not a colon: "telnet localhost 993" - but you should try it by the hostname you're configured as "mail.quirkservice.com"

I've never tried it - it may be possible, but it's not something I have done.

ok. im an idiot, yes i can connect to 143 and 993 on both mail.quirkservice.com and curley.quirkservice.com

In tbird, set teh account to drogers@quirkservice.com, and the imap host to mail.quirkservice.com (if that's what's in DNS)
yeah. i know what to set in thunderbird, i am talking about i don't know where in zimbra's configuration files to set quirkservice.com, mail.quirkservice.com, or curley.quirkservice.com

That means you're probably not connecting at all.
when i have ssl enabled, i receive a certificate from the server, so there is atleast partial connectivity.

Ok, some connectivity is better than none.

As far as zimbra config - the hostname is not that important, as long as it's configured in DNS, and you can get to it. It needn't even be on the domain that you're running mail for.

Your email domain is quirkservice.com, and it appears to be configured correctly in zimbra. (Accounts are set up as @quirkservice.com).

For mail. or curley., it doesn't matter (I assume they resolve to the same IP?)
What do you get from zmprov gas? That's the server name you should have for the zimbraMailHost in your account (which will be set when you create the account).

To recap (since I'm confused) - you can connect with tbird, and get a cert, on 993 - when you attempt to log in, you get what? Permission denied? Auth failed? And there's nothing in the logs?

yes, this machine only has one IP. (however, (www.)quirkservice.com points to another machine)

    zmprov gas gives me:
    Code:
    [zimbra@curley httpd]$ zmprov gas
    curley.quirkservice.com
    mail.quirkservice.com
    quirkservice.com

with the mail server set as "quirkservice.com"...
when i try to get my mail with ssl enable, i first get a warning that the names of the certs don't match up...which i don't think will keep it from working, since it did that before the upgrade. i then click ok, and it asks for the password to drogers@quirkservice.com .... i enter my password and it pops up with "login to quirkservice.com failed."

with the mail server set as "mail.quirkservice.com" ...
it does the same thing as before, except it asks for the password to drogers@mail.quirkservice.com (which is incorrect) and still doesnt work.
i have the account name set to "drogers@quirkservice.com" but it still asks for the password to "drogers@mail.quirkservice.com"

i hope that helps clarify. before the upgrade, i had the server set to mail.quirkservice.com but my email address was drogers@quirkservice.com

thanks for all your help on this. i really appreciate it.

    Default tbird settings

In my tbird client, for an account, I've got account name (user, no domain) email address (user@domain) server name (host name) and user name (user, no domain).

Why do you have 3 servers configured in ldap? Run zmhostname to find the active one, make sure the user's zimbraMailHost is set to that, and delete the other two. (and remove them from zimbraMailHostPool in the default COS, if they're in there (which they probably are)).
