Default ZCS as local LAN mail server

    Hi,

I am a newbie in ZCS and Linux. However our company wants me to try the same.

While going through the ZCS quick start guide on installation, got stuck with the section configure DNS. The queries are listed below.

In our scenario, we have a mail public mail server - mail.sud-chemie-india.com. We would like to retain the same as it is with the following work around.

Receiving mails originated out side of office
All users outside of our office will send mails to the public mail server. ZCS will be hosted locally in our office, which will not be directly accessible to Internet i.e it will have only a local domain name. ZCS will download mails from the public mail server through a remote pop. Mails thus downloaded into the ZCS server will be accessed by the users stationed in our office through respective email client programs.

All mails originated from office but addressed to the users out side the office
Such mails will send to the local ZCS server which will then be relayed to the public mail server.

Receiving mails originated inside the office and addressed other inside the office.
Such mails will be locally delivered and not routed through the public mail server.

Please have your views on configuring ZCS in the above method.

    Thanks

Well you could set it up as follows :-

    1) Install O/S
    2) Create a Split DNS - Zimbra :: Wiki architecture
    3) Install ZCS and you can still use the name mail.sud-chemie-india.com
    4) Once running within the Admin GUI you can set it to relay through your external SMTP server to deliver outside email
    5) Setup fetchmail to poll your remote POP to deliver into ZCS for local delivery

What hardware are you installing it on ? as you could go 32 or 64bit. If you wished to use the Network Edition later you would need to install one that is supported and the list is available here.

And yes if you are using a split DNS then it will be quite happy on a private LAN.

    Default Starting with Ubuntu

    Hi,

Downloading Ubuntu 8.04 LTS 32bit. Planning to install it by the standard procedure given in the official site of Ubuntu. Is there any specific points to be taken care on installation in respect of ZOS as LAN mail server.

    Thanks

Just make sure you are using a private IP and that you use a FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name).

    Default Cross check

    Attention please,

As far as the guidance received through forums and other docs, deciding to start installation with the following aids. Please check and have your suggestions.

    1. Since the document "Zimbra OS Quick Start.pdf" seems very much simple and it tells the specific points in respect of configuring ZOS on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, i am planning to start with Red Hat.

    2. Also Docs on Split DNS at Wiki Split DNS - Zimbra :: Wiki also describes on Red Hat.

Shall i start accordingly? i.e. Zimbra on Red Hat. Any comments from the perspective of a newbie and Lan ZOS.

    Thanks

If you are going to stay with the OSS edition then why not use CentOS 5.2 (pretty much 100% binary compatible with RH) and save yourself some money If you did decide to upgrade to NE later officially CentOS is not support yet a lot of us do run it with NE without any problems (vote for Bug 23487 – Official Support for ZCS Network Edition on CentOS ).

    Default Best solution

    Thanks for the advice.

Ours is corporate requirement where we want a best messaging solution beyond the clutches of Microsoft where money does not matter as long as it is rational.

    Thanks

Go RHES then as that is fully supported by Zimbra, and as you have seen pretty much 100% of the documentation is based around it.
