Default Should my domain name be server.domain.com or domain.com

I just did the installation and it created the domain server.domain.com and not domain.com is this correct or did I do something wrong?

It made admin@server.domain.com which I don't think is correct, if I have done something wrong how do I go about fixing what I did wrong?

It will use your server FQDN at installation time, but when installing you can override that. To change it once installed have a read of ZmSetServerName - Zimbra :: Wiki.

Does it matter what it is called in terms of mail delivery?

Yes, as the main domain created will be server.domain.com but you can just go into the Admin GUI and create domain.com, and then start adding accounts under that. To be honest that is exactly what I did.

Ya that works for me, on a secondary note I have apache installed on the same box and am having problems getting to the admin console. I already switched it to HTTPS but still can't get to it.

    zmmailboxdctl is not running

What has been switched to HTTPS ? you will need to check /var/log/zimbra.log and /opt/zimbra/log/mailbox.log to see why it is not starting.

    Default Fyi Fqdn

You may already know this but, a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) consists of a host followed by the domain, ie with server01.domain.com, server01 is the host and domain.com is the domain. Together, server01.domain.com makes up the FQDN.

When a mail server tries to deliver mail to say joe@domain.com, it looks at the domain name, domain.com, and checks the DNS records for that domain for an MX record. It finds the MX record, which in this case should be server01.domain.com, then looks for the A record for the MX expression and makes the connection to the IP which the A record resolves to. The basics.

If however someone sends an E-mail to joe@server01.domain.com, some but not all mail servers will first check to see if server01.domain.com is a FQDN with an A record and send it there before it looks for a domain MX record for server01.domain.com, which doesn't exist in this example since the domain is actually domain.com. Other mail server will only see server01.domain.com as a domain name, look for an MX record for that domain, which doesn't actually exist, and when it doesn't find it the delivery fails. I'm not really sure what the RFC's say in an instance where the expression to the right of the "@" is a FQDN instead of just the domain. But this has been my experience with mail delivery.

As far as Postfix on the local installation, it wants your primary server domain to be domain.com so it can resolve an MX record for domain.com and then resolve the A record for server01.domain.com. If you setup Zimbra and tell it the domain name is server01.domain.com, it will fail because it will try to resolve an MX record for a domain named server01.domain.com when that domain doesn't actually exist.

Like uxbod says, this is easily fixed from the command line with the CLI utlity he mentions.

Well, all my fault, and embarrasing at that. I didn't have port 25 open... I have to click save 2 times on my router and only clicked save to add the rule not apply it...

Thanks for all your help, all is working now. One other question though is it possible to just use admin as the username to login instead of admin@domain.com and the password?

Would it be bad to delete server01.domain.com from the admin console?

I think the zimbraDefaultDomainName value is used when a realm is missing, I don't have a demo system to test that right now. I also think that zimbraDefaultDomainName is only available on either 5.0.10 or 5.0.11 (i don't see it in my 5.0.9 install)
