    Question Zimbra login timeouts

Hey all. Zimbra has been successfully installed and will run great... for a while. After several hours / days, any attempt to login (web interface / email client) will not connect. It just keeps trying and/or times out.

'zmcontrol status' reports all services running and the logs have no apparent errors or warnings.
With a lack of information on why or even when this problem occurs, I'm hoping someone may have a good idea on how to track down the problem.

Restarting just ldap does not resolve the issue. I plan to try individual services upon the next occurance.

Are the client and the server on the same subnet?

Also, are you successful getting your mail through a pop3 or imap client?

also, run the following and post the results:
    su - zimbra
    sh -x zmmtactl status
    sh -x zmmailboxctl status

Note that this is the same issue as described in the thread http://www.zimbra.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3058

I should have searched for Bryan's post before posting my own.

Anyway, seems like a watched pot never boils as we were getting fairly regular lockups of the login process yesterday (and in fact this morning). After restarting the Zimbra services this morning we have had no further lockups. I am really thinking that something is causing the External LDAP stuff to break; and since we're not seeing it with other systems I'd tend to think it would be something on the Zimbra side, but it could be the External LDAP server.

I am also thinking that it could be one or two accounts have something "weird" in their LDAP config which are causing the problems, as that might explain the timing issues; right now I am trying to figure out how to setup logging so that user names are logged when access is initiated; unfortunatly the Zimbra manual is fairly sparse on actual details.

Ok, pretty much no sooner had I posted the message above, about the issue not occuring today, than it did.

I hadn't tested a POP client so I did; when the login problem occurs:
    POP3 + SSL : Login Works
IMAP + SSL : Login Hangs, eventually returns "Request Timed Out".
    HTTP : Login Hangs

    I ran the requested commands:

    [zimbra@lima log]$ sh -x zmmtactl status
    + BASE=/opt/zimbra
    + SCRIPTS='zmmtaconfigctl postfix zmsaslauthdctl'
    + case "$1" in
    + STATUS=0
    + for i in '$SCRIPTS'
    + /opt/zimbra/bin/zmmtaconfigctl status
    + R=0
    + '[' 0 -ne 0 ']'
    + for i in '$SCRIPTS'
    + /opt/zimbra/bin/postfix status
    + R=0
    + '[' 0 -ne 0 ']'
    + for i in '$SCRIPTS'
    + /opt/zimbra/bin/zmsaslauthdctl status
    + R=0
    + '[' 0 -ne 0 ']'
    + exit 0

    [zimbra@lima log]$ sh -x zmmailboxctl status
    + BASE=/opt/zimbra
    + SCRIPTS='zmmtaconfigctl tomcat mysql.server'
    + STATUS=0
    + case "$1" in
    + for i in '$SCRIPTS'
    + '[' zmmtaconfigctl = mysql.server ']'
    + /opt/zimbra/bin/zmmtaconfigctl status
    + R=0
    + '[' 0 -ne 0 ']'
    + for i in '$SCRIPTS'
    + '[' tomcat = mysql.server ']'
    + /opt/zimbra/bin/tomcat status
    + R=0
    + '[' 0 -ne 0 ']'
    + for i in '$SCRIPTS'
    + '[' mysql.server = mysql.server ']'
    + /opt/zimbra/bin/mysqladmin status
    + R=0
    + '[' 0 -ne 0 ']'
    + exit 0

    Angry Yes

The client and sever are on the same subnet, but people also connect from elsewhere. Authetication dies for everyone. After uping the error logs, still nothing stands out as a problem. Zimbra seems to be dieing (authetication timeouts) every few hours and must be restarted.

    zmmtactl status
    and
    zmmailboxctl status

    return nothing.

Note: When Bryan says "Zimbra seems to be dieing" status still shows all Zimbra services running fine. We have been unable to see ANY relevant messages in the log files - and can't find any docs on changing their settings.

Anyway Zimbra itself is "running" and appears to actually be processing mail (MTA), as well as a number of other functions. Its like the LDAP connection (pool) is getting locked up.... We've had our LDAP Admin out-of-the-office and unavailable, but he should be able to help looking at the logs in the external LDAP Server (Fedora Directory Server) on Tues.

Do any other applications use the Fedora DIR SERV?

If so, are they functioning okay?

We are running Samba 3 authenticating against FDS. Also several Apache web sites (on 3 different servers) are authenticating against the FDS server; as well as the Wildfire/Jive-Messenger Jabber Server.

None of the other services using FDS are having problems; and most of them are on the same subnet as the Zimbra box.
