set up a webpage and direct your new users there,
this page will ask your users their basic info

name

passwd

location

aliases

etc...
and then run an ldapadd.

sf.net has this.

and change it all in there

no mods are needed, its still just and ldap server,

if you want to integrate sudo, or ssh authentication then mods are needed. but for user/passwd authentication none.

you are creating a ldap ntry (and if you are not running ldap) or a user thats a shadow to ldap entry
you need to create this user hard coded into the /etc systems
