Why it is here recommended to install the proxy in any case on latest zimbra versions?
I am on a single server install and thought it is not needed ... am i missing something?

This seems to show that dnsmasq is not running and it should list "LISTEN PID/dnsmasq" tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:53 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - I might suggest to check if you need a split DNS configuration (local hostname = public domain name), if yes follow the zimbra wiki to setup dnsmasq (https://wiki....
