    Default IMAP: error syncronizing Inbox

    Hi,

I use Evolution to access my Zimbra Mails via IMAP. Almost everything works perfect, I can change a mail's status in Evolution, and it shows up in Zimbra's web interface and vice versa. But this only works if the mail is in a custom folder.

If I try to act on mails in my inbox, I only get: parse error: wrong character; expected ' ' but got '?'

Since this is what Zimbra's IMAP throws at me, I kindly ask for your help. I've already digged in Evolutions code, and as I can see this mail comes directly from Zimbra.

Do you have any idea what this message means? And why it only occurs with the inbox, not the other folders?

Is there a logfile or something I can have a look at to find out which was the complete command that caused this error?

    Thanks for help!

    Welcome to the forums

Log Files - Zimbra :: Wiki will guide you through them, but the main ones to look at are /var/log/zimbra.log and /opt/zimbra/log/mailbox.log.

(Thanks for moving my thread to the appropriate forum!)

Okay, I digged down the issue and found the cause: I have a tag called "Später" (notice the Umlaut ä).

Here is the communication between Evolution and Zimbra:

    Evolution: UID STORE 1119,1121,1123,6321 FLAGS.SILENT (\Seen Später)
Zimbra: BAD parse error: wrong character; expected ' ' but got '?'

I have a folder called "Inbox/Später", and this works, since Evolution escapes it:

    Evolution: SELECT INBOX/Sp&AOQ-ter
    Server: OK [READ-WRITE] SELECT completed

I don't know if this is an error in Evolution's IMAP implementation or Zimbra's. I already filed the bug in GNOME's bugzilla (I guess it's Evo's fault since it escapes folder names, but not tags): #533478

Thanks for your answer, I had a direct look at the communication between Evolution and Zimbra and found the cause:

I have a folder called "INBOX/Später" (note the Umlaut), and accessing/syncing it works, since Evolution escapes its name. Here is the communication between Evolution and Zimbra:

    Evolution: SELECT INBOX/Sp&AOQ-ter
    Server: OK [READ-WRITE] SELECT completed

I also have an IMAP tag called "Später", which causes an error (I guess since
    it is not escaped):

    Evolution: UID STORE 1119,1121,1123,6321 FLAGS.SILENT (\Seen Später)
Zimbra: BAD parse error: wrong character; expected ' ' but got '?'

I filed a bug against Evolution: Bug 533478 - IMAP error with special chars in tags (Evolution-Data-Server)

Or is this an error in Zimbra's IMAP implementation?

I have an similar problem with modest mail client (N900 Maemo) and zimbra 6.0.9 (open source edition) when using imap:
    https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11667

It seems to be an zimbra bug, take a look here:
    https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11428#c8
    an here:
Development list for Gnus, the Emacs newsreader

Maybe expects two spaces after QRESYNC request, and that seems to be wrong.

Is there a workaround or fix to get my zimbra in a usable state for my employees when using imap? We all use nokia n900 here and forced to use pop3 to be able using mail with zimbra.
