    Default Error

I keep getting an error on Zimbra after I send an e-mail message. It ends up in the 'Deferred' quene with an error about 'cannot connect to gsmtp2.google.com [operation timed out]' "gsmtp2" because we are sending the message to google.

Recieving mail works fine, and our ISP says port 25 is unblocked, and the router is set to foward 25 to the server.

    What am i missing?

Are DNS Lookups enabled in your adminUI?

Remember, server prefs take preference over global prefs.

    google.com mail is handled by 10 smtp1.google.com.
    google.com mail is handled by 10 smtp2.google.com.
    google.com mail is handled by 10 smtp3.google.com.

    b$ host -t mx gmail.com
    gmail.com mail is handled by 50 gsmtp163.google.com.
    gmail.com mail is handled by 50 gsmtp183.google.com.
    gmail.com mail is handled by 5 gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.
    gmail.com mail is handled by 10 alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.
    gmail.com mail is handled by 10 alt2.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.

    b$ host gsmtp2.google.com
    Host gsmtp2.google.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

i was just using that as a generic smtp. it does it for anywhere i send it. it was probably just smtp2.google.com.

but i'm more worried about whats timing the connection out.

so what happens when you say "telnet smtp2.google.com 25"?

    [bobby@support01 ~]$ telnet smtp2.google.com 25
    Trying 64.233.167.25...
    Connected to smtp2.google.com (64.233.167.25).
    Escape character is '^]'.
    220 smtp.google.com ESMTP

    Trying 64.233.167.25...

thats as far as it gets.
i'm thinking bellsouth may still be blocking outgoing port 25.

That's the most likely option, I can get a response from that mail server.
