Very slow web client on 8.5 server that was upgraded from 8.0.  Worked fine before upgrade.  Java process consumes 170% cpu consistently.  What should I look at?

I also recommend you take a look to the Official wiki article about how to improve the performance - http://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Performance_Tuning_Guidelines_for_Large_Deployments#RAM_and_CPU

Hi!

Did you also changed some of the CPU/RAM configuration?

I see that your java process is only using 7.7% of your RAM, which is odd, specially for a system with that amount of RAM. If your java VM is trying to access more memory and it can't, garbage collection will cost a lot of CPU cycles. I don't know if this is what's happening here but it could be.

Please take a look at this:

http://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Performance_Tuning_Guidelines_for_Large_Deployments

(JVM Options and memory allocation specially)

I also see some swap while you still have free memory. Maybe you could also check your "vm.swappiness" parameter (also explained in the guide).

What linux flavor are you running? what's the ouput for $ hwclock ; date? Do you have ntpd installed and running?

Regards,

Sebas

Yeah, I have 16GB RAM and I've allocated 4GB to Java. According to htop, memory usage crawls slowly upwards while java is taking 170% CPU. This time I even let it cross and go over 4096MB by about 100MB until I finally had to restart mailboxd as I can't handle another outage today. I would be willing to increase RAM for Java even further if necessary, but the cpu spinning problem starts long before it's out of memory, and at least seems rather to be the cause of running out of memory, not the other way around.

I'm using CentOS 6, ntpd is in fact installed and running, and the time/date on the server are correct.

Thx for the input!

Check zmcontrol -v output and make sure you're running build 3042 or 3043. If you're running 3040, make sure you apply the patch.

Since you're running NE, please open a case and provide a zmdiaglog (/opt/zimbra/libexec/zmdiaglog -a -j -z) from when the system is particularly slow. It'll help us analyze what's in memory and what the system is doing exactly that might be causing the slowness.

I've done that. I haven't heard back from NE support all day, it's been 6 hours. I'm getting lots more suggestions here on the forums. It's case #00165373 if that's helpful.
