Ubuntu Upgrade from 12.04 with Zimbra 8.6 with all patches to Ubuntu 14.04

Postby CrypTom » Tue Apr 12, 2016 10:03 pm

Hi

I read that you have to install the exact same zimbra version (for the new os version) after upgrading the os.

I'm planning the upgrade from ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04, but I've installed Zimbra 8.6.0 with all the patches (GA 1194).

So after upgrading to ubuntu 14.04 the only thing I can install is Zimbra 8.6.0 GA 1153 as there seems to be no complete installation containing all the patches.

How do I upgrade to ubuntu 14.04 correctly from Zimbra 8.6.0 GA 1194 on ubuntu 12.04?

Thanks for your help!

Regards
Tom

You can try the original 8.6 release, then apply the patch on top of it. That will likely work. Or you can wait for ZCS 8.7 to release. ;)

Thanks for your response.

"That will likely work" does not sound very promising, so I guess I'll wait for the next release...

Yeah, in place OS upgrades are not something we test/validate currently, and throwing in the patches just adds another wrinkle.

Sorry to butt in here, but I've got sort of an extension to the question - We're currently running Release 8.6.0.GA.1153.UBUNTU12.64 UBUNTU12_64 NETWORK edition, Patch 8.6.0_P6, running on Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS, and we do plan on upgrading to ZCS 8.7 shortly after it's released. We would like to also upgrade the Ubuntu system as well, at least to Ubuntu v14LTS, and if it's available for Zimbra, possibly v16LTS (it should be released around the end of the month.)

Is there a "best practices" guide to upgrade both the OS & Zimbra versions?

Thanks very much ,and again, sorry to butt-in here.

Well, my advice would be to upgrade to 8.7 first, then snapshot (Hopefully you have a VM), and then upgrade the OS and then re-run the 8.7 installer for Ubuntu14. We do not currently support upgrading both in a single go. We are moving towards that however with the work on making zimbra move to native packaging. You'll note with 8.7 that a lot of the packages are now installed from repo.zimbra.com via apt-get/yum (depending on OS).

http://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Ajcody-Notes-Server-Move gives information on doing a server move once you've got the new system up and running. The one caveat that you'll find here is that if you attempt to run ./install.sh on the new host, you'll end up with an error that you can't "downgrade" zimbra, since as you noted, the version will be a few builds higher due to the patches that were installed. Should you want to actually do this, you would need to hack .install_history a bit to do it. Within .install_history, you'll find lines like the following for any patches that were installed:

Code: Select all

1430492021: INSTALL SESSION START
1430492021: UPGRADED zimbra-core-8.6.0_GA_1169
1430492037: UPGRADED zimbra-archiving-8.6.0_GA_1169
1430492072: UPGRADED zimbra-store-8.6.0_GA_1169
1430492073: INSTALL SESSION COMPLETE
1430492073: CONFIG SESSION START
1430492073: CONFIGURED BEGIN
1430492073: CONFIGURED patch8.6.0_P2
1430492073: CONFIGURED END
1430492073: CONFIG SESSION COMPLETE

Code: Select all

1438784646: INSTALL SESSION START
1438784646: UPGRADED zimbra-core-8.6.0_GA_1178
1438784689: UPGRADED zimbra-archiving-8.6.0_GA_1178
1438784738: UPGRADED zimbra-store-8.6.0_GA_1178
1438784740: INSTALL SESSION COMPLETE
1438784740: CONFIG SESSION START
1438784740: CONFIGURED BEGIN
1438784740: CONFIGURED patch8.6.0_P3
1438784740: CONFIGURED END
1438784740: CONFIG SESSION COMPLETE

These show P1 and P3 being installed. You'll find others, depending on how many patches you've installed. On the destination system, you'd want to remove these sections before proceeding to the last steps of the process when running install.sh on the system once you've copied /opt/zimbra to the new system. Once it's upgraded and you confirm things are running properly, you could then re-patch (just install P6, no need to re-install each patch in order) and you'd be good to go. The typical warnings, of course, still apply. :) Also, don't try doing this for anything but patches if you value your data. (i.e. don't try downgrading to 8.5.0 or something) :)
