Does Zimbra need it's own server?

Postby 939pcoleman » Mon Feb 25, 2008 8:13 pm

In the process of migrating Zimbra to a new server(OS X 10.5) in a new location. I will have a server that is running MACs Open Directory & DNS. Can Zimbra be run on the same system? Someone thought Zimbra would need it's own server with nothing else running?
Is this correct or not?
Thanks.
Pat

this would of course depend on how many users you plan to support. if it's just a handful then it shouldn't be a problem, as dns on the same machine wouldn't use up too much resources.
the only other concern you have to worry about is port conflicts. shoudln't be a problem for dns but what is open directory? if it's some ldap thing there might be issues, becaues zimbra runs a ldap server. of course you could run either the zimbra-ldap or the open directory on another port if you know what you're doing. i dont even know if thats a concern cause i dont know what open directory is.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. At the moment the number of users is around 60 but will get a little higher.

Open Directory is Apple's implementation of OpenLDAP. The Zimbra we having running now uses the Apple LDAP do that is how it will probably be done again. So can I disable the Zimbra LDAP?
Thanks.

Something to note would be that as far as I've seen Zimbra does not yet work properly on 10.5.
I can't wait until it does, since we are probably picking up a nice Mac Pro equipped to run as a server soon (XServe is too small/noisy) and I don't think Tiger is an option on the current hardware revisions. Worst case is Ubuntu in a VMware session, but still, running native is much nicer.

If Zimbra needs it's own LDAP then from a section in the link below

it would seem it can still connect/authenticate to an external one?
Section is: Connecting to an External LDAP Server

Thanks wolrah for the note about 10.5.
I wasn't sure about this.

wolrah, I didn't finish reading your post.
Why do you think Tiger is not an option?

Zimbra can use an external LDAP for authentication only. (well maybe there's a way to set it up for everything but it's probably not worth the effort) I use that here at work, since I had an LDAP server that we use for authenticating other things.
As for 10.5 - it's not supported yet. That's the simple answer. Will it work? Mileage May Vary. Vote for that bug wolrah posted if you want it supported.

You say you use an external LDAP to authenticate to. So do you still run Zimbra's LDAP?
