Zimbra Store Eating Space?

Postby mdamda » Mon Jan 06, 2020 6:37 am

Hi All,

I have a ~6 year old Zimbra 8.04 Install on a CENTOS 6.4 Machine (on bare metal).

I'm concerned about the rather large amount of space being used by the Zimbra /opt/zimbra/store folder. It's now up to over 500GB, despite by manual count, the actual mailbox sizes should be in the range of <150GB.

Email retention is already set to just 30 days.

I have tried using the Zimbra Dumpster w/ success for individual users which means that there is indeed space to be reclaimed. However, it seems that the dumpster isn't being run on its own.
I have used: zmmailbox -z -m user@example.com -A emptyDumpster

I have tried the following command to get the dumpster to auto purge:
zmprov mc default zimbraDumpsterEnabled "TRUE" zimbraDumpsterPurgeEnabled "TRUE" zimbraDumpsterUserVisibleAge "1d" zimbraMailDumpsterLifetime "1d"

I have also checked that the dumpster is enabled:
zmprov gc default zimbraDumpsterEnabled
# name default
zimbraDumpsterEnabled: TRUE

However, it does not seem like the dumpster is actually running on the server.

Is there anything else I should check so I don't need to run ?

Apart from this, should there be anything else I should check to reclaim space on the drive? Apart from setting up an internal email system (only intra organization), most of the settings on this install should be mostly stock/default.

Thank you very much!

You really should not be running a version of ZCS that is that old. Older versions of ZCS have considerable security problems and even have exploits that could compromise/hack your server. I'd suggest you get onto the most recent version of ZCS and use the ZeXtras Migration Tool to move everything to a new server.

Thanks Bill!

Actually an upgrade is on the near horizon roadmap. However, I can't reliably test this as a cold migration is currently undoable due to the difficulty of porting such a large /opt/zimbra folder. This is also partly why we are doing this -- so I can simulate a proper backup / restore.

500GB will take me more time than i have to backup.

Under 100GB however, is perfectly doable.

I will look into Zextras. Thank you!

Hello,

Did you try zmdedupe to earn some space or zmblobcheck ?
Maybe you have some orphan account ? Present in the database or file system but not in the LDAP.

Hi DualBoot,

Thanks for this.

These commands are actually new to me so I'm guessing they haven't been run before (inherited this install of Zimbra and I've been learning as I go).

I will run both and post back.

Thank you! :)

Edit:

Hi,

I've already run both. Unfortunately there is no space yet reclaimed. :/

Check (and double check) the dumpster variables for your accounts/CoS.
If dumpster is enabled but never purged, you can get this kind of storage issue.

Ok I redid this (apparently I was editing a different COS than the ones the users were on)

I'll update within a day or two if there are changes:

zmprov mc 'cos1' zimbraDumpsterEnabled "TRUE" zimbraDumpsterPurgeEnabled "TRUE" zimbraDumpsterUserVisibleAge "1d" zimbraMailDumpsterLifetime "1d"

So I'm dumb and setting the dumpster to operate on the wrong COSs caused this entire issue. It's taking a while but I'm getting space back.

Thank you all! :)

And yes, I am targetting an upgrade. Just need to be able to perform a proper backup and restore first! :]
