No more Zimbra Desktop until 8.0?

Postby rotorboy » Mon Apr 23, 2012 9:35 am
Zimbra Desktop will EOL in a future release of Zimbra but ZD 7.2 will be supported with Zimbra 8. The technology choices to provide offline access to Zimbra have expanded since the release of Zimbra Desktop 1.0.
Does this mean if we upgrade beyond 7.2 that our users will have to move away from Zimbra Desktop?

I think Zimbra (ZCS) 8 will support Zimbra Desktop 7.2, however, Zimbra Desktop will cease development at the 7.2 release.
And when ZCS 9 comes around, Zimbra 7.2 will not be supported. However, from the crumbs I can pick up from some of the posts from Zimbra people, it looks like they have some newer technologies that will replace most of the need for ZD.

Most of the need for Zimbra Desktop was to get an equivalent experience to Outlook with the integrated mail and calendar stuff.
Nowadays you can get a similar experience in an off-the-shelf client with the combination of IMAP and CalDAV. Those combination clients aren't quite as good yet, IMO, but they're a lot better than they used to be, and some effort spent improving those might be more worth it at this point. I don't know that's what Zimbra's up to, just speculating...

Please continue any discussion about the future of ZD in one place; in this, earlier, thread:

Can anyone explain why the earlier thread referenced gets you an "Invalid thread specified" page?
Thanks!

I upgraded 7.2 to 7.2.6 and users are complaining that their Zimbra Desktop stop working. Does Zimbra Desktop 7.2 works will Zimbra 7.2.6? This is never mentioned in 7.2.6 release note!
