Before I'd install the appropriate aspell dictionary, can you please confirm, am I right to assume that this will disable the English spellcheck? There won't be any language selector option, I guess?

Correct. There is no selector at this point

And changing the browser's language setting won't help either, as aspell can not be configured to multiple dictionaries, right?

Are there any plans to support different spell checker languages simultaneously? A per-user or, at least, per-domain preference would be quite useful, especially for those of us who are trying to host a zimbra-based e-mail service for several countries (you know, in Europe we have the nasty habit of having almost one language per country). :)
If there are no plans for such a preference, can you please provide pointers on the best way to implement it?
Thanks in advance

You could modify /opt/zimbra/httpd/htdocs/aspell.php to look for language tag in the body of the mail message and then switch dictionary while scanning as necessary. This way you could have multiple language check in single message.
For example:

bla bla bla
en_US

English message
