Need some help

Postby 16324Cory » Mon Nov 27, 2006 8:47 am

Thank-you both, I will test some hardware and do a swap of eth card. But I at least have some direction to go on.
I am using an old IBM P4 Netvista as a server with 1GB of memory and a 120GB HDD Onboard Ethernet.
I will try a memtest first, then try to install a new ethernet card second. Hopefully this fixes the problem.
I will let you know.

Yes, switching the NIC and disconnecting the onboard worked. I can now lose the connection (unplug it) and it doesn't lock up.
However, I am still experiencing an issue with lockups that are random.
Here is what happens:
For no reason that I can figure out, the server locks up almost solid. It will happen at night (every night) and once or twice in the day (not every day),
When this happens, I can't even putty in or log in through the command line. It is a different issue, because when it happened before with the NIC being disconnected, it used to have a beep like you had your finger on the keyborad and there would be no on screen activity. Now there is no beep, it is just not logging in. The keyboard still works, and will show up on the screen, but it is acting like it is waiting for the authentication to go through, but it never does.
So, does anyone recognize this or have any thoughts or oppinions?
Thanks.

OK, weirdness happens again! WHY ME!~!
Last night I ran "top" through putty on a computer in our network. Last night was the first time ever that the server didn't crash during the night!
I did this in hopes that what ever caused the server to lockup, would cause putty to be kicked off leaving the last running processes on my screen. Then I would know what the issue was that was locking the system up.
Well now I just wasted another night and I am no further ahead!
Does anyone know what the heck is going on?

What else can you tell us about the problem? Is there anything in the zimbra logs that show increased activity or any problems? Does it happen at the same time each night? Anything else running on this server? Have you done the obvious standalone hardware diagnostics on this server? Particular attention should be paid to memory tests (in my experience that usually causes unexpected lockups).
Regards

Bill

Random hard freezes are classic symtoms of faulty hardware, usually memory. Try running memtest86 on it for a day or so to check the memory out.

There was also a perl one that was on the main monitor.
The weird thing, is it works great, until it just locks up!

I did do a memtest, there were no errors.
By the looks of it, Zimbra was the last thing running when it died.
