[SOLVED] Zimbra on DRBD

Postby creagel » Tue Oct 05, 2010 4:49 am

Hi all,
I have one problem with Zimbra + heartbeat + drbd. Everything works fine, but sometimes outgoing mails goes to Spam folder on server of recipient.
Problem is in this mail header (ip address and domain name changed):
Received: from mail.domain.tld (zimbra1.domain.tld [192.168.1.2])

by mail.recipient.tld (Postfix) with ESMTP id C0AF18552E5

for ; Tue, 5 Oct 2010 11:00:41 +0200 (CEST)
Heartbeated ip adres is 192.168.1.3, but ip address 192.168.1.2 is native ip address on outgoing interface (and zimbra1.domain.tld is dns record for this native ip address).
This is a problem for some antispam solution :(
Is there a way, how to use heartbeated ip address for outgoing connection (one solution is nat, but ... :( )?

[SOLVED] Zimbra on DRBD

[quote user="k_k"]hi guys,

this post is really interesting n useful..i have some queries :
1 ) how much data DRBD solution can support ??? any maximum limit ??

2 ) does this DRBD solution support storage appliance ? means if /opt/zimbra is mounted on storage partition then will it support ?
please help me to understand.[/QUOTE]
1.) As big as your disks and as fast as your connection between the two servers.

2.) It's possible, you just have to have the storage under /dev/ so DRBD can use it. Be carefull! DRBD does not support two active nodes! (There are exeptions, but in most cases it doesn't)

[SOLVED] Zimbra on DRBD

Postby Geetha Thanu » Wed Mar 09, 2011 4:44 am

Hi
I saw your reply in the forum. Can you help me in clearing some doubts in setting up HA for open source ZCS.
We have a SAN external storage. Confused with two setup.
1) having /opt/zimbra in SAN and mounted this as a common mount point in two servers. Implementing only HA without DRBD.
or
2) Creating two LUNS in SAN and mounting the two LUNS to two servers and impleneting HA + DRBD. we have around 1000 Mailboxes and planning to implement on Centos.
Please suggest which will be the best and problem free solution.
Thanks

[SOLVED] Zimbra on DRBD

Postby leog21 » Thu Mar 10, 2011 7:38 pm

Hi Geetha,
You don't need to use DRBD if you already have a SAN environment. Just point both of your servers to the same LUN on the SAN. You just have to make sure only one server at a time mounts the LUN to prevent any corruption.
What type of a SAN do you have and over what protocol are you connecting?

[SOLVED] Zimbra on DRBD

Postby Geetha Thanu » Mon Mar 14, 2011 12:23 am

Hi Leog21
I have NS20 EMC box with SAN, NFS and Multipath licensing. Presently this storage is used as NFS storage as the application running on it demands the same.
First I thought of connecting the box as NFS only..and tested with a spare 1 GB space..This area was used of /opt/zimbra and mounted the same mount point to 2 servers. I was careful that at a time only one mount point was used.
If the server shuts down properly, the other server was able to mount the common mount point /opt/zimbra and was able to come up and zimbra was working fine.
But if the server is not shutting down properly, locks are created and other server is unable to comeup ...LDAP database gets corrupted.
Hence decided to go about with two LUNS and mount as SAN to both the servers and use DRBD for copying data...
Now Please clarify the following.
1) Is the above ie 2 LUNS mounted to 2 servers in SAN and using DRBD is a good solution.
or
2) whether is SAN box (what I have) has the capability of copying the data from one LUN to another LUN by itself so that DRBD can be avoided.
or
3) to have a single LUN in SAN (common mount point /opt/zimbra) and mount

to two servers. (Only doubt I have here is if the server which mounted the /opt/zimbra goes of suddenly, will the data gets corrupted..like what happened when I tested in NFS....I dont have a spare SAN box to test the same now.)
As the mailbox size is huge around 1 TB, I am worried.

Please clarify...I am really confused what solution to deploy.
Thanks

[SOLVED] Zimbra on DRBD

Geetha,
You need to have one volume/lun/mount point that both servers can access.

You also need something intelligent in the middle to manage the mounting so only one of the servers mounts that volume/lun. You can use heartbeat (linux-ha.org) Heartbeat version one is fine for a simple two node, if you want to go more complex, use the newer version, renamed Corosync.
This way only one server mounts the NFS volume/ FC lun and then you can bring up zimbra services on that box.

Important step during the installation, to make sure the UID-s and GID-s are the same on both servers. eg.: zimbra user is 501 on one server and the same 501 on the other server.
Otherwise zimbra won't start when HB takes over.
