zimbra connector for mac outlook

Postby cds-aaron » Thu Feb 06, 2014 2:42 am

Hi
As far as I can tell there is no zimbra connecter for mac outlook to do all mail, contact and calenders etc.

I have opted for imap in outlook, and the Zimbra Connector for Apple iSync to get the contacts and calenders. This has worked until the Maverick release of Mac for me.

My first question is there a plan for the zimbra connector for mac outlook? I'm happy if the answer is there are no current plans for this. I'm just an IT tech and have had to set up zimbra on macs occasionally for clients. I know there is the zimbra desktop.

My second question is the Zimbra Connector for Apple iSync meant to work on the Mac OS maverick? I had it working perfectly on leopard, but have been unsuccessful on two separate macs with maverick on them. The calendars and the contacts dont sync. Moreover I believe its the sync service as I cant get that to start. I have followed the zcs zimbra Connector for Apple iSync guide to setting it up as well.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Aaron

The Zimbra Connector for Outlook works with Microsoft's MAPI connection on Windows Outlook, but interestingly Microsoft doesn't use MAPI for their Mac Outlook product. Instead, the Mac Outlook client connects to the server using an Exchange Web Services (EWS) connection. The good news is that the Zimbra engineering team is currently at work developing an EWS interface for the Zimbra Server, which will mean that Outlook for the Mac will be able to connect to Zimbra directly. (no connector needed) Sadly, Microsoft had showcased EWS for Outlook on Windows prior to the latest release which would remove the need for ZCO altogether, but then pulled it out at the 11th hour, so the Zimbra Connector for Outlook will have to live on for Windows users.

Thank you for the very informative information! That makes me feel like there's still hope! :) I recently moved from Linux workstations to MacBook Pros, after fighting Apple for 25 years. Having this will solidify my decision to move to something that "just works" for the most part. Is there any rough estimates you can throw out? I know that in software development you can't really give time lines but a guestimate within a +/- 6 months would be cool.
Thanks

EWS support is currently targeted for our next major release (ZCS 8.5) which will be out before the end of 2014 (likely well before then).

Hi. Thank you responding to my query. That will keep some of my clients happy for a while.
