Procedure for moving ZDB files?

Postby robertcl » Fri Jan 23, 2009 10:35 am

Our BES is starting to fill up due to the growing size of the ZDB files and I'm in need of moving them from the default location of ...Local SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook to a new drive. If I go to Mail control panel->Data Files->Settings->ZDB configuration, I see an option "Store ZDB in external folder" as well as an option to set a new path and a "Move ZDB" button. Is this as simple as it appears? Any warning? Can blackberry services be running during this move? Has anyone here done this? Thanks

Always stop the services first and follow the procedures for stopping the Blackberry Server as documented on the wiki.
We store ours to an external profile because of the size issues too. If you select the desired location for it to be stored and then select "Move ZBD" it should move the currently used store to the new location.

Procedure for moving ZDB files?

Postby catnipper » Fri May 29, 2009 8:06 am

I tried to follow the procedure as described:
After all I was able to move the ZDB for the Profile "BlackBerryManager" - but not for the "BlackBerryServer". Whenever I open "Mail control panel->BlackBerryServer->Properties->Data Files->Settings" it increases the number of the currently selected Profile (BlackBerryServer24.zdb->BlackBerryServer25.zdb).

Even worse: this brakes the profile for the affected user (do a reactivation without wipe on the BlackBerry to fix the issue without data loss on the handheld)!
Any ideas?
Maybe Zimbra would like to include some note in the ZCS setup guide to change the location to some other location right during the setup...?!

Thanks for the tip. We will consider including 'Moving zdb' note to the install document.
In addition, zdb move should be performed when BB controller and BB manager are stopped. Please also make sure that the following processes are not running at the time of the move:
-CalHelper.exe

-Outlook.exe

-BlackBerryManager.exe

-bbmgrw32.exe
Please follow these steps to move zbs for a particular pofile:
-On 'ZDB configuration' panel specify new path where zdbs will be stored

-Hit button

-Hit to close panel
Depending on size and number of zdbs being moved, it may take some time for process to complete.

Procedure for moving ZDB files?

Postby sgnaus » Sat Dec 12, 2009 7:10 am

hi there,
i'm experiencing a problem with this procedure.

I've added to my bes server an iscsi volume of 500gb size.
Followed the entire procedure for moving zdb files, after the files were moved i've restarted the service but it not sync with the blackberry's pda.
I've tried to rollback setting the profile to store the data into the profile folder (the default configuration) but this seems to not solve the problem.
Any idea?

I solved the issue by mounting the drive into the appropriate folder on the OS level. Much easier than doing all the fancy stuff and risk to loose 30 profiles!
Hope this idea may help.

sorry, could you specify what you're meaning for "mounting the drive into the appropriate folder"?
i'm using an iscsi volume so Windows sees that like a second disk (d:/)

Check in your disk management "Change drive letter and paths" and assign it the path your files are located (of course stop BBY and move the files as you can mount a NTFS disk only to an empty folder).

How to create and use NTFS mounted drives in Windows XP and in Windows Server 2003
This I solved my issue running out of disk space C:/ while unused ZDB files remain and other grow continuously.
