The word 'huge' doesn't actually tell how many people want it, do you have some survey or figures to back that comment?
Just to mention 2 I found via search-function

Just to mention 2 I found via search-function
Well I counted six people in those threads that want what you want, that's not exactly a "... demand for smaller licence-packages is very huge..". I think you'll have to resign yourself to the fact that it's not going to happen.

The only question there is: Why not?
The answer to "tiny needs" (less than the minimum licence) is "hosted service", as already suggested.
Unfortunately hosted services have legal/security issues and aren't always possible.
I'm an OSE user who would like an affordable paid solution, unfortunately I also think Zimbra's business plan is entirely reasonable. Cheaper plans might increase revenue but hurt profit badly through increased costs.
There are other projects like Zarafa that might work? But I've never looked and have no idea how to get that to work with Zimbra.

I realize this i an old thread, but I couldn't resist keeping my fingers away.
I really don't see the harm in some sort of really small license, like a developer license. I want to test real world scenarios, but in a small scale. I want to gain knowledge and know-how, how else can I persuade my clients that Zimbra is really really good and that they should definately switch from whatever solution they're currently using?
I'm not saying that Zimbra is any different from most others, regarding license obstacles. I just thought you were better. Anyhow, for me and my clients, mobile features is the key ... sure, there are work arounds, but it also means much more work compared to just use active sync (as from what I can tell not having ever tried it).

It sure is a pitty
Question:

Would it be possible to enhance the opensource Version with Active-Sync?
Exchange ActiveSync is a proprietary protocol and only used under license from Microsoft. This is one of the reasons it's only available as part of the Network Edition of ZCS.

That fact alone will make it impossible to include in an Open Source edition of the software.
